COFFEE WITH SCIENCE - WHERE DO MAMMALS WALK? THE ATLAS OF MAMMALS OF PORTUGAL AND THEIR APPLICATIONS
29 APR 2018
With Márcia Barbosa (CIBIO - University of Évora)

In this session of Coffee with Science we will present the Atlas of distribution of mammals of Portugal, to understand how and why it was produced, what is still to be done, how the public can participate and its multiple applications.

A. Márcia Barbosa is a Guest Assistant Researcher at CIBIO - University of Évora. She has a BA Sc. degree in Biology from the University of Porto in 1999 and a PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of Malaga (Spain) in 2006. She has also worked for the University of Extremadura (Caceres, Spain) and Imperial College London (United Kingdom ).

Her research areas include biogeography, macro-ecology, species distribution models, biodiversity and conservation, wherein her main target species are mammals and amphibians from Western Europe. She is especially interested in integrating and combining methods from different fields of science (such as ecology, physics and computing) into multidisciplinary approaches, developing innovative methodologies and applications, and making them freely available. She currently coordinates implementation of the Atlas of Mammals of Portugal, directs a research project on large scale distribution patterns and their usefulness in conservation, and produces free software with analytical tools for ecology and biogeography.
