The artistic practice of Mariana Caló (1984, Viana do Castelo) and Francisco Queimadela (1985, Coimbra) encompasses video, Super 8 and 16 mm film, slides, paintings and drawings, generally presented as organized visual environments.
‘The Book of Thirst’ consists of five 16 mm films projected in a loop and a photograph in a light box, which allows viewers to edit the images and build their own film. The use of analogue films, together with the fact that some are constructed from photographs, reinforces the main theme of this work: perception of the passage of time, its manifestations and interpretations. Images of several people quenching their thirst, caged animals and mythological creatures associated with ancient rites, such as pixies, transform this installation into a genuine anthropological study, in which thirst is associated with vital instincts and freedom.
This exhibition is included in the Contemporary Projects programme, a dynamic platform for the presentation of works by emerging or established artists, who develop new forms of art across different disciplines that are relevant for the younger generation. The programme, now in its third year, includes exhibitions, performances and multidisciplinary interventions in the spaces of Serralves Museum and Villa.

‘The Book of Thirst’ is organized by the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, Porto, and is curated by Ricardo Nicolau, curator of the Museum, assisted by curator Filipa Loureiro.
