FROM THE COLLECTION IN BARCELOS: WORDS IN FREEDOM: E.M. de Melo e Castro Collection
from 07 JUL 2017 to 23 SEP 2017
The Fundação de Serralves - Museu de Arte Contemporânea currently holds one of the most complete collections of visual, concrete and experimental poetry. A key contribution to its holdings was the acquisition, in 2003, of the E.M. de Melo e Castro Collection. Its breath allows for an in-depth study of the various anti-literary experiments that, from the 1950s onwards, would radically change our relationship with the word, both written and spoken.
This exhibition features books, magazines, pamphlets, posters and object-poems from the Serralves Collection that reveal the interest in the visual dimension of writing and developments in experimental poetry that went beyond the written word. Not only the letters but also the sounds, rhythms and materials were fundamental for these poets. Faced with the multitude of possibilities that opened up with experimental poetry, they argued for an absolutely ‘random rigor’, in which, like in a game, rules and playfulness merge. Experimental poetry was looking for non-contemplative readers to combine action with writing and reading.
