Jazz in the Park 2014: Baldo Martínez Cuarteto Europa
19 JUL 2014
A new project from the Galician bassist, Baldo Martínez, aligned to the aesthetics of "European jazz". He is accompanied by three of Europe’s most dynamic musicians. Dominique Pifarely is heir to the lineage of French jazz violin music, that began with Stephane Grappelli and also encompasses Jean-Luc Ponty and Didier Lockwood. The Swiss trombone player, Samuel Blaser, has gained a deserved leading position amongst a new generation of trombone players. The Spanish percussion artist, Ramon Lopez, who lives in Paris, and is now a key part of the French jazz scene, has become one of the world’s least creative percussionists, through unusual combinations of drums, Indian tablas and Flamenco cajons. Cuarteto Europa is a project that blends "mainstream" and avant-garde jazz, defined by the poetic nature of its compositions, the "drive" of its improvised solos and the close interaction between the four members, providing a new perspective on a musician (Martinez, the main composer) who has previously performed with Joachim Kuhn, Louis Sclavis, Carlo Actis Dato and the Portuguese singer, Maria João.
