Jazz in the Park 2014: Norbert Stein Pata Generators
05 JUL 2014
Pata Generators is one of the most recent configurations of the Pata Music project, created by the German composer and saxophonist, Norbert Stein. As the name implies, the project’s main source of inspiration is "pataphysics” – a pseudoscience / pseudo-philosophy developed by the playwright, poet and novelist Alfred Jarry (which he described as "the science of imaginary solutions'). Pataphysics is based on the idea of paradox and the absurd that marked literature and the arts in the first half of the twentieth century (key "pataphysicists” included Eugéne Ionesco, Juan Miró, Max Ernst and Marcel Duchamp) and that continues to have influence today. Three current examples in the world of music include Boris Vian, Soft Machine and Acid Mothers Temple. Adopting a chamber jazz format, this quintet situates itself between jazz tradition and an innovative approach, with omnipresent humour.
