When, twenty years ago, I first placed the vinyl record on the turntable and heard the song Pithecanthropus Erectus, something changed inside me.

It was something unlike anything I’d ever heard, with such specific energy, intensity and loudness ... that it grabbed me and I decided to become a jazz bassist.

I consider that Charles Mingus is one of the most important North American musicians of the twentieth century, a leading jazz musician, who was more than just a great double bass player – he was an outstanding composer.

His extensive work, created over nearly six decades, strongly rooted in the Blues and Gospel music, in the Jazz of Ellington, Bird and Monk, influenced by the music of Schoenberg and Stravinsky, often served as a vehicle for protests against racial and political causes, simultaneously traditional and avant-garde, sweet and aggressive - reflecting his own complex and unstable personality.

For many years I dreamt about putting together a band that could pay tribute to this musical genius and I finally achieved this goal with a group of outstanding young musicians who dedicated themselves to this great adventure with tremendous fire and passion: The Mingus Project
