QUE SAIS-JE: ARTISTS’ BOOKS AND PUBLICATIONS OF THE SERRALVES COLLECTION
The Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art began collecting artists' books in 1999. Since then the collection has continued to grow in number and scope, and now totals more than 5,000 artists’ books and publications.
Que-sais je? borrows its title from the famous French pocket encyclopaedia, founded in 1941 and designed to foster general public knowledge of a wide range of topics. Published on the occasion of the homonymous exhibition held at the CAPC, Musée d'art contemporain de Bordeaux, and the Serralves Contemporary Art Museum, this publication presents a selection of 26 books and publications, authored by 21 artists. The publication underlines how this medium offers alternative perspectives on what it means to produce knowledge.
It includes a text by the curator of Serralves Museum, Ricardo Nicolau, and republishes texts by Chus Martínez, director of the Art Institute of the Basel Academy of Art and Design, and by Clive Phillpot, writer, curator and former director of the Museum of Modern Art Library, New York.
