LEARNING NEW SKILLS IN SERRALVES - WOOL: SHEEP SHEARING
21 MAY 2016
Wool production commences with shearing, that usually takes place between April and May – in early spring.
In Serralves, the farm’s Bordaleiras and Entre-Douro-e-Minho sheep will be shorn, in order to process the wool locally, during the practical workshops in the autumn.
This activity aims to show how we obtain the wool that we use every day and how this should be correctly removed from the sheep. A good shearer is not only an essential step in order to obtain high-quality textile fibre, but also an opportunity to demonstrate respect for the animal that offers us a valuable raw material, and which must be treated with due care and knowledge.
This is a unique opportunity to see an important moment in the wool production process and learn many interesting facts about shearing.
