MASTERCLASS WITH CARLOS BICA, FRANK MÖBUS AND JIM BLACK
27 JUL 2013

The masterclass is aimed at musicians or anyone interested in all areas of musical expression. This initiative aims to create an open dialogue with the audience and try to respond to a wide array of issues related to group-based musical practice. The topics addressed will include musical creativity, composition, group performance, and knowing how to listen. Bica, Möbus and Black will share their individual and collective experiences with the audience.

In 1996, Carlos Bica released his first album as a bandleader in Portugal. It was a breath of fresh air within the Portuguese music scene and had serious repercussions internationally – revealing new potential musical directions within the field of instrumental music. The album was called "Azul", that was also the name of the group. Working alongside musicians Frank Möbus and Jim Black, Carlos Bica created the ideal showcase for his compositions. The trio has stayed together since then and matured its musical identity - which is now blurred with that of Carlos Bica. It was via the group that the double bass player once again revealed remarkable results in 1999, with Twist; in 2003, with Look What They've Done To My Song; in 2006, with Believer, and in 2011, with "Things About".
