Hailed as "British dance’s true iconoclast,” Michael Clark is a defining cultural figure. At Serralves, Clark undertakes a three-week residency: a daily choreographic practice culminating in public presentations of the work created. Taking inspiration from the architecture of the Serralves Villa, the residency will allow a broader audience to discover Clark’s work: a practice marked by a mixture of technical rigour and experimentation, intense and fine-tuned choreography intersecting with elements of punk, Dada, pop and rock.
To celebrate the presence of Clark and his dancers, Harry Alexander and Melissa Hetherington, at Serralves, a series of intensive master classes have been programmed for dance students from Porto’s arts education schools, offering them the opportunity to gain an understanding of Clark’s iconic style.
Since emerging in the 1980s as a prodigy at London’s Royal Ballet School, Clark has remained at the forefront of innovation in dance, collaborating with – among others – such compelling artists as Sarah Lucas, Leigh Bowery, Peter Doig and Charles Atlas, and musicians Mark E. Smith, Wire, Scritti Politti and Relaxed Muscle.
