"Monika Sosnowska: Architectonisation" by Ana Tostões
09 MAY 2015
Guided Tour to the exhibition by Ana Tostões, Architect and President of Docomomo Internacional.

"Monika Sosnowska: Architectonisation" recovers concepts and practices of the early twentieth century European avant-garde, proposing a stimulating dialogue between sculpture and architecture. This visit aims to show visitors that the architectural space is a defining dimension of the sculptural experience. Conceived in dialogue with the architecture of Serralves Museum, designed by Alvaro Siza Vieira, the Monika Sosnowska exhibition addresses sculpture as a universe based on memory, time and space. The legacy of modern architecture, as an active memory of the recent past, that has marked the construction of the contemporary outlook throughout the world, is transformed into a symbolic ruin, confronting the repressive and poetic past of her native Poland with the brutal explosion of a neoliberal economy. Monika Sosnowska is an artist who is capable of fostering change, able to produce the surreal at a true-life scale, to deconstruct fragments of large-scale works taken from structures used in the construction of buildings, in order to rebuild them at a monumental and spectacular scale. Citation and transformation are a pretext for an intense visit across space and time, and through sculpture and architecture.
