SERRALVES: GUIDED VISIT TO CREATION OF THE SILKWORM AND DEMONSTRATION OF EXTRACTION OF SILK THREAD
11 JUN 2016
In a room environment, we propose a guided visit to the creation of the silkworm (Bombyx mori) in Serralves Farm. We will learn how this insect, which has been domesticated by man for centuries, develops, and how it produces one of the most interesting textile fibres ever produced: Silk. This visit will be take place at a special moment in the creation process, when participants can simultaneously watch the various stages of the development of the silkworm.
Finally, the public will be able to watch the process of extracting silk thread from the cocoons, demonstrated by Maria Teresa Frade - a natural artisan from Castelo Branco who has worked in the field of silk production for decades – who will teach participants how to transform cocoons into thread.

Coordination: Alice Bernardo, Professors Helena Tomás and Paula Péres (visit), Maria  Teresa Frade (demonstration)
