THERE'S LIFE IN THE PARK! - BRYOPHYTES – MOSSES
19 NOV 2017
With Cristiana Vieira and Helena Hespanhol (Researchers of CIBIO-InBio - Research Centre in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources)
Due to their small dimensions, bryophytes often go unnoticed - camouflaged or hidden in any urban or natural environment, but they nonetheless play essential roles in many ecosystems, such as the recycling of nutrients and carbon fixation. They are the first colonisers of many spaces that are unsuitable for other types of plants, thus contributing to soil formation.
In this talk, we’ll learn about the main characteristics that distinguish mosses from other groups of plants and will understand several of the applications, secrets and myths relating to them. In the itineraries in the Park, participants will explore the various places that have been colonised by them.

10:00am - 13:00pm
WORKSHOP - BRYOPHYTES (MOSSES): CRYPTO-WHAT?
In a workshop dedicated to cryptogamic botany, there’s nothing like starting with uncomplicated terminologies and learning how to distinguish fungi, algae, lichens, bryophytes, and pteridophytes. Let's focus on the wonderful group of mosses - small living sponges that have no roots, stems, or leaves – which are the first organisms to colonise areas devoid of life.
Using magnifying glasses and tweezers, we’ll observe their structures and learn about several species that you will easily identify on walls, trunks and soils.
