Michael Krebber (1954, Cologne, Germany) is one of the most important German artists of the past two decades, and one of the most significant and influential contemporary painters today. Having had a major influence in the Cologne art scene during the 1980s and 1990s, also as a prominent teacher at the Städelschule, in Frankfurt, Krebber frequently collaborated with Martin Kippenberger, Kai Althoff, Cosima von Bonin and Albert Oehlen. His approach to painting, and to abstract painting in particular, remains a central reference in contemporary art. Engaging with the material and conceptual aspects of the medium, Krebber’s work confronts the conventions of what a painting is, from gesture and composition, to exhibition and display. His interest lies in the continual exhaustion and renewal of the traditions of painting, and his work, deeply imbedded in the history of the medium, deals with ‘how figure and ground, form and format, surface and space, colour and object, frame and wall, object and installation, light and place, material and reference, title and context, original and found material can be related to one another’. Krebber’s work is characterized by a play with painterly qualities, the scrutiny of the boundaries of a painting, and the tension between abstraction and representation.
