In 2012, the Foundation strengthened the implementation of measures to reduce energy and water consumption, and achieved significant reductions. 

Measures to reduce energy consumption (electricity and gas)              
- Replacement of the light bulbs used in the Library’s Work of Art with lower wattage bulbs;
- Placement of motion sensors to switch on / turn off lights in the bathrooms;
- Reduction of the operating periods of the extraction fans (Museum);
- Reduction of outdoor lighting times throughout the Foundation;
- Reduction of the wattage of all the light bulbs in the Foundation;
- Reduction of the operating period of the air conditioning system only during the period when the exhibition is open to the public, in exhibition rooms where there are works of art that do not require air conditioning;
- Control of the operating hours of the energy consumption monitoring and equipment, from the Centralized Technical Management System (GTC);
- 50% reduction of lighting in technical zones;
- Closure of the UTA of the exhibition rooms and the library, during the night (10h per day);
- Deployment of greater flexibility in the temperature and humidity set-points/parameters of the artwork galleries;
- Closure of all Serralves’ administrative areas from 20:00;
- Placement of signposting in internal areas.

Measures to reduce water consumption    
- Reduction of the water flow in all the buildings’ taps;
- Raising the awareness of all cleaning and security subcontractors and employees to alert the maintenance department in the event that a water leak is detected.
