NOVO BANCO and Serralves Museum launch the 2018 edition of the NOVO BANCO Revelation Photography Prize

Applications may be sent until June 8

NOVO BANCO and the Serralves Museum launch the 2018 edition of the NOVO BANCO Revelation Prize, which distinguishes young artists in the field of contemporary photography. Each year the prize is given to a grand winner chosen from four finalist projects, attributing €4,500 production grants to each artist to implement their projects, wherein they can freely choose the topic of their project.

An international jury, with different members in each edition, selects up to four projects, from which a grand winner will be chosen. The names of the four shortlisted photographers, including the winner, will be announced at the end of June. The finalists, in addition to receiving production grants, will have the unique opportunity to present their work in a group exhibition at Serralves Museum, to be inaugurated in the last quarter of 2018. A catalogue with the work of the winning artist will also be published.

Projects may be submitted by artists of Portuguese nationality, or foreigners resident in Portugal, with an age limit of 30 years (at the applications closing date - June 8, 2018).

NOVO BANCO Revelation is an initiative that distinguishes young Portuguese artists in the field of photography.

Launched in 2005, this initiative has distinguished and granted awards to 39 young artists.
By establishing a joint initiative with the Serralves Museum that promotes the emergence of new artists, NOVO BANCO has strengthened its strategy of cultural sponsorship of photography and has simultaneously intervened in the community through innovative forms of promotion of art, in particular in the context of young Portuguese contemporary artists.

Submitted projects must be sent by the Post Office (CTT), via registered post with recorded delivery, to NOVO BANCO Revelation Prize, Serralves Foundation, Rua D. João de Castro, 210, 4150-417 Porto, until June 8, 2018 (postmark date).

Tiago Madaleno (Vila Nova de Gaia, 1992) is the winner of the NOVO BANCO REVELAÇÃO PRIZE 2017. The young artist exhibits his project "Clepsidra" at the Serralves Museum, in an exhibition on display between October 17th 2016 and January 7th 2017.
Tiago Madaleno’s project Clepsidra - a narrative in the form of a performance - proposes to explore the relationship between photography and temporality, by invoking the presence of the human body in the process of producing images. Using an installation fitted with several devices that exploit an adulterated use of photographic vocabulary, the project questions the visibility conditions of photography, in particular the processes used to produce photographs and use of the index as a working tool.
Other finalists:
Henrique Loja aims to present a set of photographic plates printed in a large format, under the title Aeroponic / Air Works, in which he will simulate a fiction, wherein photographic film is propagated as an air quality monitoring device. In this project, the artist meticulously works with image transfer processes between analogue and digital media.
Diogo Bolota - with his project Relance - refers to the confrontation between objects, questioning their habitual function and the strangeness resulting from their fusion with each other. Like a photographic image, which often conveys different realities, new meanings are created in this junction of objects, based on a familiar context, thereby altering their perception through the creation of a sense of amazement.
Ana Barata Martins works essentially with the essay film, photography, sculpture and text. In her project she intends to explore the different aesthetic aspects of the typologies of Portuguese contemporary vernacular architecture, trying to understand its elements, composition and influences.
