Ignatz is the name of a cartoon character drawn by the illustrator George Herriman. He is a mouse and arch-enemy of the cat Krazy Kat. His main hobby is to throw bricks at the cat's head, who mistakenly interprets these actions as declarations of love. Belgian artist, Bram Devens, adopted Ignatz's name as his alter-ego. However, instead of being armed with bricks, he throws emotional songs at us, born from the human condition, wrapped in effects and corroded by magnetic tapes, fuelled by improvisation and spontaneity. His songs emerge from a familiar minimalistic context, reminiscent of Henry Flynt's primitivism. Meandering, they distil the steam that hides beneath a cool surface. While his guitar is adorned with refined simplicity, swept by passing rhythms and intersecting with small motifs of a keyboard, his voice pulls back from the heart of the song to creep forward, displaced and perilous.
