Ai Weiwei’s relationship with cinema has been developed in parallel with
his artistic practice, often expanding it or establishing fructuous dialogues
that bring together works from different periods, geographies, and cultures.
Spanning over the last two decades and comprising approximately fifty titles,
the artist’s filmography explores the border between the agitprop denunciation
documentary and video art practices. Ai Weiwei’s films are issue-based, and the
mere presence of the camera stands as a witness to the political and economic
injustices that dominate the world.
This programme presents 17 films, divided into four thematic nuclei,
reflecting some of the concerns that define Ai’s view of cinema: from
censorship and political repression in China to his fight for human and animal
rights, and featuring also his conception of art as a form of social reparation
and as a powerful communication platform to focus attention, force changes in
opinion and influence decision-making where it is most needed.
