Alberto Carneiro (São Mamede do Coronado, 1937) is one of the artists who opened up new paths of artistic enquiry in Portugal in the 1960s and 70s. He has developed a unique oeuvre ? in which art and nature are intertwined. Carneiro’s work blends seamlessly with his own life, including reminiscences of the place where he was born and raised, and where he first discovered his talent as an artist and creator.Alberto Carneiro considers the present exhibition a manifest, where the central idea is to demonstrate that art is the artist but also the viewer.Conceived as a unity and specifically created for the spaces in Serralves, the show consists mostly of new works made from roots and trunks of orange trees, olive trees, bamboos and vines, always accompanied by glass panels or mirrors with texts. These reveal the importance of the written work in Carneiro’s oeuvre and involve the viewer through his/her reflection: ‘your imagining being’. The works are indentified as ‘moments’ in their titles, reiterating the fact that the trajectory of the viewers occurs not only in space but in time as well.
