Alexandre Estrela (b. Lisbon, 1971) has persistently interrogated the potential of the moving image and the devices through which it is captured and presented. By exploiting unexpected associations between image, sound and structure, Estrela transforms visual experience into a physical encounter beset by a dazzling suspension of meaning.
‘Meio Concreto’ [Half Concrete / Concrete Medium], Estrela’s major exhibition to date, features mainly recent works spanning from 2007 to 2012. Many of them have been adapted to the spaces of the Serralves Museum. The exhibition unfolds along two trajectories, in which works are activated depending on whether the date of the visit is even or odd. In their latent state, the sound and image devices gain a sculptural quality that is crucial to an oeuvre that questions the purported immateriality of the image.
Opening date: 12 July, 22h
Note: due to the fact that the exhibition unfolds along two trajectories in which works are activated depending on whether the date of the visit is even or odd, it is possible to visit the exhibition in two different days with the same ticket. The International Association of Art Critics (AICA) attributes an award to Alexandre Estrela
In January 2015, the artist Alexandre Estrela was awarded a prize by the International Association of Art Critics (AICA).
In a press release, AICA stated that "the 2013 AICA / SEC / Millennium bcp Awards for the Visual Arts and Architecture were, by unanimous decision of the jury, awarded to the artist Alexandre Estrela and the architect João Pedro Falcão de Campos".Alexandre Estrela began exhibiting her works in the 1990s. The jury stated that, "the 'Meio Concreto' exhibition (Half Concrete), held at the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, between June 29 and September 29, 2013, confirmed the vitality and relevance of the work” that the artist "has developed over recent decades”. "Using primarily projected images and sound, and also sculptural structures and formats, the works presented in this exhibition place the visitor at the centre of an experience which combines, in a faultless manner, a critical gaze over museographic devices and a sophisticated reflection concerning the status of the image, the perceptive phenomenon and its possible somatisations”, stated the jury."The presentation of this set of works, produced between 2007 and 2012, was complemented by a unique catalogue that enlarged and multiplied the objectives of the exhibition, constituting a decisive document for a more complete knowledge of Alexandre Estrela’s authorial universe” the jury aded.
The jury was chaired by the curator João Silvério and also included the architect Ana Tostões, the fine artist Bruno Marchand, the art critic and historian Helena de Freitas and the architect Luís Santiago Baptista. The visual arts award and architecture award of the Portuguese Section of the International Association of Art Critics is attributed in partnership with the Ministry of Culture and the Millennium BCP Foundation.
