Augusto Alves da Silva (b. 1963, Lisbon) is one of the key Portuguese artists to have emerged in the 1990s. Although working in various fields, he is renown above all as a photographer, having contributed with some of the most distinctive works produced in the Portuguese art universe over the last 20 years. Augusto Alves da Silva uses the illusory neutrality of photography and the codes automatically convened by certain image regimes (e.g. landscape, portrait), to present clear images whose exceptional features aren’t immediately evident but must be discerned through careful observation; ultimately, nothing in these works is ever as it first appears. Thereby they foster a deferred interpretation that retrospectively undermines our initial impression. This will be the first retrospective exhibition of one of Portugal’s most important contemporary photographers.
