AUTOCHTHONOUS FOREST DAY – THEMATIC VISIT

24 NOV 2012

23 November is Autochthonous Forest Day, aimed at promoting the conservation of natural forests. This is the best day to begin seeding or planting trees, given the specific weather conditions of Spain and Portugal, in alternative to World Forestry Day (March 21), which was initially created for the Northern Europe countries. The Autochthonous Forest – a forest constituted by trees originating in the respective native territory - is better adapted to the local region’s climate and soil conditions and is more resistant to infestations, diseases and long periods of drought and heavy rainfall, when compared to introduced species. It is a key element in the conservation of landscape heritage and biodiversity.Everyone’s cooperation is essential in order to preserve our Autochthonous Forest. To celebrate this day, the Serralves Foundation will offer a guided visit to the Park on 24 November, dedicated to the discovery of the autochthonous species that inhabit this area of outstanding landscape and artistic value.
Orientation: João Almeida, Serralves Park Director On 23 November, the Serralves Foundation will join forces with cre.porto (the Regional Centre of Excellence in Education for Sustainable Development of the Porto Metropolitan Area), and we suggest that visitors participate in the tree-planting activity at Monte Padrão, in Santo Tirso.
