BLUE LINES, RED THREADS: SOCIAL TENDENCIES THROUGH ARTISTS’ PUBLICATIONS
from 15 MAR 2014 to 29 JUN 2014
Artist publishing has offered space for artists to create, distribute and exchange their work freely and independently. Crossing the boundaries between research, production and criticism as well as between documentary and fiction, books and magazines have enabled artwork and writing to co-exist. This exhibition explores recurrent themes in artist publications over the last fifty years and unveils a multilayered network of visual, textual and social relationships. As with the childrens’ game ‘Chinese Whispers’, words and meanings change according to interpretation, context and sometimes misunderstanding. The display of historic book works, posters and ephemera in cabinets devoted to different themes — including Corresponding, Visiting, Mirroring, and Fighting — traces correspondences, duplications and conflicts between artists, places and generations. The publications on view are drawn from the Serralves Collection of Artists’ Books and Editions, which includes over 5,000 items, and the Publish and Be Damned Public Library, a collaborative project based in London. Established by guest curator Kit Hammonds, a Publish and Be Damned has engaged with artist-led publishing as a space for exchange through events and exhibitions internationally since 2004.
