EDGAR PÊRA: RETROSPECTIVE

Edgar Pêra’s Retrospective, presented by Serralves, marks the thirtieth anniversary since his first film (the music video, Dunas, for GNR). The retrospective proposes a journey through the many facets of his oeuvre – that is particularly proficuous, unstable, chaotic and difficult to grasp as a whole. Nonetheless his work is also a key to understanding the invention of modernity in Portugal.Since the mid 1980s, Edgar Pêra (1960, Lisbon) has built up an unparalleled oeuvre in the panorama of contemporary Portuguese cinema. After graduating from the Lisbon Film and Theatre School in 1984, he has developed, often in partnership with other artists, a multi-faceted filmography, in which he has experimented with different media, languages and filmic media - spanning film and video, and more recently including the Internet and 3D formats, as well as music videos, comics, live performances, television, theatre and installations.Claiming the legacy of the early avant-garde movements, Edgar Pêra is one of the generation of protagonists who, in the 1990s, looked for the signs of a new urban life, against the backdrop of the ruins of the fire in Lisbon’s Chiado neighbourhood. While closely following the emergence of Portuguese rock music, or the first editions of Moda Lisboa, documenting everyday life with an archivist’s obsession, Edgar Pêra – the Dziga Vertov-style kino-man, for whom the camcorder is an extension of his own body – uses his cine-diaries as visual and fictional material for comics, chronicles and critical reviews, that he has published in the pages of the weekly newspaper O Independente and the magazine K. His regular collaboration with the press - which, together with sketchbooks and other graphic works will be presented in a documental exhibition - is inseparable from his production as a filmmaker and helps frame the universe of mutants that populate his films.In fact, his oeuvre combines an ironic appropriation of fantastic imagery with strategies based on animation cinema and special effects from the early days of cinematography, using a rhythm that is reminiscent of Soviet montage, often wrapped in a B-movie aesthetic.Subverting codes of classical narrative and consensual plastic values, he is more interested in a cinema of sensations rather than a cinema of emotions, dismantling stereotypes in order to challenge notions of reality and realism. However his work has never ceased to focus on contemporary dilemmas.
