EDGAR PÊRA: RETROSPECTIVE - 13 NOV

13 NOV 2016
17h00 session:

The Day of the Musician  | 5 min.Conceived as a workshop with students from the Film and Theatre School of Lisbon for a theatrical performance, the short film, The Day of the Musician, is inspired by a scathing text by Erik Satie on the process of bureaucratisation and functionalism of the world of artists. The film aims to present a hyperbolic and sarcastic portrait of the musician’s strictly regimented daily life. A carefully ordered day-to-day life that tends toward the absurd.

Fading World  | 15 min.Fading World is based on an "aqua-realistic" interpretation of the book, Um Mundo Sobre o Outro Desbotado, by Maria Isabel Barreno. The film takes the form of a report of an alien invasion, covered by what appear to be hallucinations. The allegorical image of stirring the waters - which reflect and distort the old questions of reality and representation (also cinematographic) – in this case flow into a proposal to see things differently, which is also a nagging challenge to the established order and common sense.

Underground Gardens  | 20 min.An animated film conceived in order to accompany a musical performance in tribute to Al Berto. Underground Gardens forges a dialogue with the lettrist experiences of the early twentieth century. The poet's words are deconstructed, spatially streamlined and subjected to a movement that permanently reorganizes and reconfigures them, exploring hidden meanings therein, and multiplying the possible interpretations of the text, accompanied by the music and vocals of Pacman, of the Portuguese band, Da Weasel.

Komédia Off  | 13 min.Komedia Off consists of a set of fragments of the film that were projected simultaneously with the choreography designed by Paulo Ribeiro for the performance, "Comédia Off”, a playful work that explores the boundaries of dance and musical comedy. In tune with the work’s underlying irony, the film intensifies the elementary and physical language of the show, where the versatility of the performance and movement of the eight dancers is enhanced by the mechanisms of repetition and slow-motion that are inherent to the cinematic image.

22h00 session:

The Window (Don Juan Mix) | 87 min.The oscillatory movement of the Bica funicular in Lisbon underpins the ebbs and flows of The Window (Don Juan Mix), a vertiginous and cyclopean film, in which a kaleidoscopic complex of six different actors play the same character, Antonio, who interacts with six lovers, all personified by the same actress. But, the film asks who is the true Antonio? Antonio is a bohemian who lives in Bica, a character-inducer of popular Portuguese mythological stereotypes, such as marialvismo (Don Juans who frequented the bars and dark alleyways of Lisbon’s Mouraria district) or fado music, which unfolds across this film in an imaginative exercise of an identity crisis, and a crisis of the subject and reality.
