EDGAR PÊRA: RETROSPECTIVE - 15 NOV

SWK4 | 33 min.SWK4 addresses the futuristic, surrealist and modernist universe of Almada Negreiros, by revisiting different texts written by the author between 1915 and 1917: Mima Fataxa, Cena do Ódio, Manifesto Anti-Dantas, A Engomadeira, K4, O Quadrado Azul, Saltimbancos and Ultimatum Futurista. The 6-part film, corresponding to the texts on which the film is based, portrays Almada Negreiros "without any cultural reservations, provocative, in defence of lust, debauchery, frenetic daily experience, highly intense ways of living" also functioning as a stimulus towards the possibility of applying the provocative and eccentric impulse of futurism in relation to a defeatist and nostalgic contemporary outlook.



Blue Krime | 15 min.Inspired by the life and work of Amadeo de Souza-Cardozo, Blue Krime is based on an idea of anachronistic continuity, which is used to compare ethnographic peculiarities of Portuguese contemporary life with pictorial fiction, primarily suggested herein by the painter’s emblematic painting, The Procession (1913). Positioned between different spatio-temporal coordinates, the film questions reality, using the dynamics of Souza-Cardoso’s paintings, and explores a sense of complicity between reality and fiction.


Avant La Corrida | 10 min.Avant La Corrida is a documentary that portrays the production of another film, Blue Krime (2009). It may be seen as an ironic "making of”, based on the different stages associated to the film’s mise-en-scene and shooting stages. In this sense, the iconoclastic narrative focuses on the hidden occurrences behind the camera - the off-screen and out-of-shot elements from Blue Krime - in a tug of war between the inversion of fiction and simulated reality.


Agit Tekno Kountdown | 13 min.The short film, Agit Tekno Kountdown, works frenetically with accelerated visual movement of bodies in festivals, parties and discos. More than a documentary about so-called urban tribes – or from the opposite perspective, as a film about possible youth alienation - the film rehearses an extension of the viewer’s perceptual field through sensory experimentalism, while questioning the relationship between massification, counter-currents and revolution. If the revolution is the avant-garde, where can we find the avant-garde of the revolution today?
