EDGAR PÊRA: RETROSPECTIVE - 20 NOV

20 NOV 2016
17h00 session:

Perpetual Movements – Cine-Tribute to Carlos Paredes | 77 min.Resulting from the encounter between the guitar and a Super 8 camera, Perpetual Movements is a cinematic tribute to the music and thinking of Carlos Paredes, the undisputed master of the Portuguese guitar, who the film accompanies in seventeen distinct movements. The underlying theme of Perpetual Movements is a concert given by Carlos Paredes in the Carlos Alberto Auditorium in Porto (in 1984), where we discover that the musician is also a prolific storyteller. The narrative is a fragmented journey through his music and career, complemented by film diaries by Edgar Pêra, that transpose Carlos Paredes’ musical creation to an urban setting.

22h00 session:

The Baron | 90 min.Based on the homonymous novel by Branquinho da Fonseca and the short story, O Involuntário, by the same author, The Baron is a "neuro-gothic remake of a ghost movie," whose dreamlike atmosphere seeks to portray the life experience of a misogynist and tyrannical Dracula-style nobleman who terrorizes the population in the Barroso mountains, in Northern Portugal. Halfway between a comedy, musical and horror film, the references articulated with an aesthetic that is close to a comic book, The Baron achieves an imaginary dialogue between two periods – the contemporary era and the period in which Branquinho lived. It doesn’t solely provide an analogy between the contemporary world and the historical setting of the novel (Salazar’s dictatorship), above all, it conjures up the timeless arrogance of the Baron. The film also develops as a platform for referential projection of the memories of a film buff - spanning Russian constructivism, German expressionism and American Gothic – addressing both the history of cinema and the political anachronism of the situations depicted in the film.
