‘Histories’ is a three-part exhibition
drawn from the Serralves Collection, highlighting the importance of
narrative in recent art making. Marking the 15th anniversary of the
opening of the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, the exhibition
invites fresh thinking around art collecting and contemporary art in the
twenty-first century. The exhibition includes over 60 works in
painting, sculpture, film and video installation, photography and
performance, many recently acquired, together with a selection of works
by artists planned for the Collection.
Presented over the summer of
2014 in the Serralves Museum, Villa and Park, ‘Histories’ proposes three
inter-related moments, in which visitors are invited to consider new
trajectories in art across time and space.

SERRALVES VILLA
In the Serralves Villa,
history is presented literally in the selection of works dating from the
foundational decade for the Serralves Collection of the mid-1960s to
the mid-1970s. Presented in the light-filled interiors of the art deco
Villa will be works by the lead proponents of arte povera: Giovanni
Anselmo, Giorgio Griffa, Jannis Kounellis, Mario Merz, Michelangelo
Pistoletto and Gilberto Zorio; together with sculptural pieces by Hans
Haacke, Imi Knoebel, post-minimalists Robert Morris, Richard Serra,
Richard Tuttle and Barry Le Va; and seminal early sculpture, video,
photography and conceptual propositions by Portuguese artists Helena
Almeida, Artur Barrio, Alberto Carneiro, Lourdes Castro, Vítor Pires
Vieira, and Ângelo de Sousa. Arising from distinct artistic but
interconnected cultural contexts in Europe and North America at the
time, these works share a concern with the physical properties of
materials as carriers of meaning - gravity, weight, density,
transparency, process and chance - and a relationship to the body in
space as performing as well as perceiving.
SERRALVES PARKIn the Serralves Park, works by Zulmiro de Carvalho, Rui Chafes, José Pedro Croft, Luisa Cunha, Richard Long, Charlotte Posenenske, Danh Vo, and Gilberto Zorio enter into a relation with the formally designed gardens of Jacques Gréber, and the surrounding landscape of the Serralves Museum, designed by Álvaro Siza. Installed in some of the most beautiful areas of the art deco gardens, in the central parterre, the Rose Garden, and in the surrounding gardens of the Museum, the Holm Oak Glade and Yew Glade, these works will engage in fresh dialogue with the Park and pre-existing iconic works by Claes Oldenburg & Coosje van Bruggen, Dan Graham, Richard Serra, and Fernanda Gomes.
The Serralves Collection in the Park will also coincide with a new, temporary outdoor commission by Nairy Baghramian as part of the Sonae/Serralves Project which will be on view until 15 December 2014.
