João Penalva frequently uses video or an installation of collected or invented documentation as a support for his work. His projects represent narratives in which the fiction is a combination of references from reality. The banal and the known coincide unexpectedly, resulting in the extraordinary. In the artist’s works, the spectator encounters a precise assembly of facts, documents, places and histories that immediately confront him with different possible interpretations. The present exhibition is the result of a co-production between the Museu de Serralves, the Ludwig Museum, Budapest — Museum of Contemporary Art and the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin. At Serralves, the exhibition focuses on a selection of work that has never before been seen in Portugal, also presenting a new video installation specifically produced for this occasion.
