MONIKA SOSNOWSKA: ARCHITECTONISATION

The Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art presents a major survey of the sculptural works of Monika Sosnowska (Ryki, Poland, 1972). This is the first exhibition in Portugal devoted to the artist’s work and reflects the Museum’s commitment to artists whose work can respond to the unique context of Serralves. ‘Architectonisation’ has been conceived in dialogue with the architecture of the Serralves Museum designed by Álvaro Siza. Presented over seven of its largest galleries, the Museum atrium and the exterior Pátio da Adelina in a progression of installations and objects made between 2003 until the present, the exhibition reveals in breathtaking form, the elaboration of an artist who thinks sculpture. Among the works included are early corridor and pavilion structures that create alternative spatial routes that rely on the viewer’s movement through them, free-standing sculptures and sculptural interventions that allude to collapse and the fragment, and large-scale wrought iron works composed of structural elements for buildings on a scale of one to one, that are melded into suspended, draped and shifting forms in space to monumental effect. Smaller-scaled spatial propositions, both abstract and functional, reveal Sosnowska’s attention to the details of materials and forms as both investigative and deeply human.

27 FEB, 22h00-24h00, FREE ENTRANCEA short concert by the Acre trio (Filipe Felizardo, Gabriel Ferrandini and Pedro Sousa) will take place at 11 p.m.
ACRE is formed by Gabriel Ferrandini on drums and percussion, Pedro Sousa on saxophone, and Filipe Felizardo on the electric guitar. The trio was formed in 2011. It never aimed to be an ad-hoc project. With three singular itineraries across the Lisbon and European music scene (Ferrandini in Motion and RED Trio's, Pedro Sousa in Canzana and EITR, and Filipe Felizardo as a solo performer), the three musicians share the same passion for unspeakable violent improvised music and debris-free rock. Although they’ve only rarely given performances, the band’s manifesto defends a raw sculptural attitude, both in terms of their united timbres and their discourses, focused on the narrative of the concert.

Piece by piece we will build a light and flexible structure with our family, whose size can be increased or decreased. Monika Sosnowska Monika Sosnowska was born in Poland in 1972. Though Sosnowska trained primarily as a painter at the Art Academy in Poznan, she gradually moved away from that medium during post-graduate study at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam in 1999–2000. She was the Resident Artist at S-AIR, Sapporo, Japan (2002) and in Künstlerhaus Bethanien (2004). In 2003 Sosnowska was awarded the prestigious Baloise Art Prize in Basel, Switzerland, as well as the Polityka’s Passport award given by Poland’s most influential weekly newspaper. Sosnowska represented Poland at the Venice Biennale in 2007, curated by Sebastian Cichocki, where she presented her work 1:1. She was also present in the 2011 edition with Antechamber, curated by Bice Curiger. In 2012 she created the outdoor installation Fir Tree for the Public Art Fund in New York. Sosnowska has had solo exhibitions at the Serpentine Gallery, London (2003); the Freud Museum, Vienna (2005); MUSAC, León, Spain (2006); Museo Rufino Tamayo, Mexico (2011); and both in 2013 in the Aspen Art Museum, Colorado and the Australian Center for Contemporary Art.
