Curator: João Almeida Production: Fundação de Serralves Originally a nineteenth century garden, inherited in 1923 by the Count of Vizela, Carlos Alberto Cabral, Serralves Park, as we know it today, was designed and built on the basis of plans by Jacques Greber, urbanist and architect of French gardens, during the turbulent interwar years. A singular reference of garden art and landscape heritage in Portugal, the Park presents a complex mosaic of spaces and scales, which have been adapted, in an exemplary manner, to the biophysical conditions of the setting, functioning as a bridge between French neoclassical tradition and modernism. The estate was sold in 1953 to Delfim Ferreira (an industrialist from the North of Portugal), and the Portuguese State acquired it from his heirs in 1987. The subsequent installation of the Museum of Contemporary Art in the Serralves Estate has ensured the preservation of this remarkable space, enabling the memories of this heritage site, that span different moments of the 19th and 20th centuries, to be passed down to future generations, thus fostering a unique relationship between art and nature. This exhibition aims to provide an insight into the rich and complex history of Serralves Park ? from its origins to the present day. It will reveal less well-known aspects of this unique space, including conservation initiatives conducted over the last 26 years that led to it being listed as a National Monument in December 2012.
