In the framework of exhibitions scheduled for the library, an annual
exhibition has been planned, dedicated to a specific art form. These
exhibitions are not intended as a showcase of works, but rather in
order to present a historical documentation of these art forms.
This year’s project is consecrated to performances, happenings and body
art, including exhibition of documents, videos and films that
illustrate this major art form - as recognised from the end of the
1950s onwards - and including a programme of films and videos, live
performances and conferences. The aspects addressed within the
exhibition include the historical development of body art from the
avant-garde movements of the 1920s to the contemporary era; body art
and performances in France, e.g. by Gina Pane and Michel Journiac; and
Wiener Aktionismus, with artists such as Schwarzkogler, Valie Export or
Hermann Nitsch. The overall objective of the project is to highlight
the different manners in which the body may be used as an instrument
and vehicle of artistic creation, and reveal its influence on the
emergence and evolution of new art forms, using a wide array of
documentation.
