THERE IS LIFE IN THE PARK! – MOSSES AND LICHENS

ITINERARY, 11:30-12:30With Cristiana Vieira, Helena Hespanhol and Joana Marques (Researchers from CIBIO-InBIO - Research Centre on Biodiversity and Genetic Resources)Due to their small dimensions, mosses and lichens often go unnoticed - camouflaged or hidden in any urban or natural environment, but they nonetheless play essential roles in many ecosystems, such as the recycling of nutrients and carbon fixation. They are the first colonisers of many spaces that are unsuitable for other types of plants, thus contributing to soil formation. Although often difficult to distinguish, mosses and lichens are totally different living things. We will present the main characteristics that distinguish these two groups, unveiling some applications, secrets and myths, while exploring the various nooks and crannies of Serralves Park, that has been colonised by them.Meeting point: Serralves FarmCapacity: 25 participantsTarget audience: families and the general public
