Since the start of his career, Thomas Schütte has made works in which he has reacted directly to political events such as neo-Nazi activities in Germany after 1989, or the first Gulf War in 1991. In other works he has invented metaphors for general social trends, such as the current engagement with globalised capitalism. Deeply shocked, hurt, bitter, cynical, witty and aggressive, he has realised the political works in different media and according to various approaches he has made his own over the course of more than 25 years. Thus this exhibition acts as a retrospective with an unusual focus, and incorporates some of Schütte’s most important works.
