TO THE ARTS, CITIZENS!

‘To the Arts, Citizens!’ focuses on some of the intersections between art and politics as manifested in our time by looking into issues such as activism, citizenship, memory, immigration, ideology, revolution, utopia, iconoclasm, democracy, catastrophe, crisis, sexuality, environment and globalization, among others.
The exhibition brings together works produced by artists born after 1961, the year of the construction of the Berlin Wall, an object that materializes an ideological divide which marked the twentieth century, and whose shadow still impinges upon political and cultural thought at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
Simultaneously, the Museum will also present the exhibition ‘On the margins of Art’ which gathers a selection of artworks by numerous artists and groups, and includes magazines, graphic works and other published materials that illuminate utopia and intervention upon reality through references to political contexts and themes.
‘To the Arts, Citizens!’ is part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Portuguese Republic, established in the sequence of the Revolution of 5 October 1910.
The exhibition will open on the 20th and 21th November 2010 and will run until 13 March 2010.
