TRISHA BROWN

from 26 MAR 2011 to 01 MAY 2011

Dedicated to North-American dancer and choreographer, Trisha Brown, this exhibition presents an overview of the radical reinvention of dance in the 1960s and 1970s through video documents of some of Brown’s most emblematic works. Founder of the Judson Dance Theater – together with Yvonne Rainer, Lucinda Childs, Steve Paxton, and others – Brown invented an entirely new lexicon of movement in the 1960s that was based on extreme economy, gestures from daily life and very simple rules and instructions. Brown also pioneered the incorporation of film into dance and constantly collaborated with visual artists, filmmakers and photographers, such as the French-American Babette Mangolte and the American Elaine Summers, who used her work as the starting point to explore the potentials and limitations of documenting and translating dance and performance into new supports.

This presentation of Trisha Brown’s work anticipates the arrival of her Company at the Serralves Museum and Park between 21 and 24 April with a programme specifically conceived for these venues.
