XXI EXHIBITION OF THE CAMELLIAS OF PORTO

from 05 MAR 2016 to 06 MAR 2016
Anticipating the arrival of the Spring, from 5-12 March Porto will once again be transformed into the City of Camellias, during a week filled with activities dedicated to what many consider the "Queen of Flowers". As an integral part of Porto’s cultural and natural heritage, the species has spread from the city and conquered Northern Portugal and Galicia. The creation of the brand "Porto. City of Camellias" in 2015 has further strengthened this relationship, which has its high point in March, through organization of the XXI Exhibition of the Camellias of Porto. This year the XXI Exhibition of the Camellias of Porto will be transferred from the Monastery of São Bento da Vitória to Serralves Villa, dedicated to the theme "Porto, open to the world. Challenges of the XXI Century in the XXI Exhibition". The event will once again include a competition to select the "Best Camellia” and the "Best Camellia of Portuguese Origin ", and also, for the first time, the "Best Table Decoration" and "Best Floral Arrangement".The exhibition programme also includes a Display of School Works, the traditional Camellias market, as well as several workshops linked to camellias. During the 2-day exhibition, the Japanese Shadow Theatre will also return, presented by the visual artist Beniko Tanaka, in three sessions held in the Chapel of Serralves Villa.
The programme of events associated to this special flower, which originates from Southeast Asia and is also known as a Camellia japonica, is not limited to the Exhibition itself. As in 2015, the event will extend to other parts of the city throughout the week - from 5-12 March - with over 40 initiatives open to the general the public, including guided tours, workshops, concerts, lectures, exhibitions, conferences, tastings and lots of street entertainment.
