NOSSA TERRA
Mario Marret | GNB | 1966 | 35’
Nowadays, Mario Marret's “Nossa Terra” is a film of combat and guerrilla warfare that simultaneously films and participates in the activities carried out by the PAIGC, with the sole aim of achieving independence for Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde. Shot in the mid-1960s in Guinea-Bissau, it was immediately used as a weapon in the anti-colonial struggle and in a program that aimed to win Africans over to the cause, but also to demobilize and demotivate the Portuguese in everything related to the war.
THE RETURN OF AMÍLCAR CABRAL
Djalma Fettermann, Flora Gomes, José Bolama, Josefina Crato, and Sana na N'Hada | GNB, GUI, SWE | 1976 | 33 min.
A historical film in the true sense of the word, “The Return of Amílcar Cabral” is the first production by Guinean filmmakers after liberation from Portuguese colonialism in 1974. The film documents the transfer of Amílcar Cabral's remains from Conakry, where he was assassinated in January 1973, to Bissau in 1976. Intriguing coverage of the solemn event, recordings of Guinean songs, and archival footage of Cabral during the guerrilla war pay tribute to the thinker.
