In the Salinas Valley, during and after the First World War, Cal Trask (one of the three magnetic performances of James Dean's career) feels he must compete alongside his brother against all odds for his father's love. Cal feels frustrated in all aspects of his life, from his reaction to the war to how he should progress in business and life, to his relationship with his distant mother. Despite his controversial legacy in Hollywood, Elia Kazan was one of the greatest filmmakers in the American studio system, with directing actors being one of his greatest strengths. East of Eden is one of the great moments of melodramatic reinterpretation of a culturally rooted theme (the biblical references range from the film's title itself to the obvious parallels between Abel and Cain and the Trask brothers), with the mercurial talent of its protagonist James Dean as its point of view.
