Made in the same year as Summer with Monika, Sawdust and Tinsel is almost the tonal opposite of that film, even though its dramatic core is consistent with it: enclosed, obscure, and emotionally violent, Sawdust and Tinsel follows a traveling circus troupe where Harriet Andersson (who played Monika from the previous film, who wandered through summer and the dangerous countryside) is once again at the center of the drama, playing Anne, a circus artist and lover of the circus owner, who will engage in a dangerous game of seduction with another actor. In addition to the dramatic darkness and intensity of the actors' work, Sawdust and Tinsel also mark Bergman's first collaboration with cinematographer Sven Nykvist.
