1007 Sunn O)))
Charles Peterson

As part of the programme that Serralves is dedicating to musician and composer Stephen O'Malley in 2026, the Foundation presents one of the most radical and influential musical projects of today: Sunn O))). The concert is part of the European tour marking the release of the new album of the same name, released in April 2026 by the historic Sub Pop label, and marks the return of the duo Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson with their first set of unreleased tracks since Pyroclasts.

Formed in 1998, Sunn O))) have built—, over almost three decades—, a body of work that dissolves boundaries between drone, metal, minimalism and experimental composition. This tenth album was recorded at Bear Creek Studios in Woodinville and produced by Brad Wood. Conceived in close connection with the surrounding natural landscape, the album expands the duo's language: six panoramic compositions where feedback, spectral harmonics and deep sub-bass coexist with field recordings, subtle aquatic resonances and moments of unexpected suspension. For the first time, all instrumentation was performed exclusively by O'Malley and Anderson, in a deliberate return to the band's essential core. After a career marked by collaborations with artists such as Attila Csihar, Hildur Guðnadóttir or Scott Walker, this new phase affirms the intensity of the duo format as a laboratory for continuous sonic exploration.Renowned for their extreme volume and rare physicality, Sunn O))) transform each concert into a truly immersive experience. On stage, shrouded in mist and dressed in monastic robes, they erect long-lasting tone architectures where time seems to expand and gain thickness. The absence of conventional beats, the lowest registers of the guitars and the meticulous manipulation of resonance create a vibrational field that is felt in the body before it is organised in the mind. The visual dimension accompanies this sonic ambition: the cover of the new album features works by Mark Rothko, reinforcing the dialogue between sound, colour and space that runs through the entire project.

More than just a concert, this will be a total sensory event — an encounter with the materiality of sound, where duration, density and volume are converted into a collective experience of rare intensity.
