Despite its disastrous debut, “Playtime” is now considered one of the essential works of European cinema and also of comedy in any decade or latitude. The clumsy Monsieur Hulot is perplexed by the intimidating complexity of a Paris brimming with modernity and technological devices. He tries to meet a business contact, but quickly gets lost. “Playtime” is the culmination of Jacques Tati's cinematic work, combining his sharp criticism of the modernity that shaped France's destiny and his even sharper sense of humor, characteristically constructed through mise-en-scène, sound design, and, particularly in this film, a pharaonic art direction, where a gigantic city was built in a studio, in what is one of the greatest (and best) materializations of an auteuristic world in cinema.
