The film follows Dixon Steele (Humphrey Bogart), a violent screenwriter suspected of murdering a young woman. His neighbor, Laurel Gray (Gloria Grahame), gives him an alibi, leading to a love affair between the two, which quickly goes awry due to Dixon's dangerous instability.
