Roberto (Jean-Louis Trintignant), a shy law student in Rome, and Bruno (Vittorio Gassman), a capricious and talkative man, take a road trip through the Roman countryside and Tuscany. Il Sorpasso is one of the milestones of commedia all’italiana, even though the dramatic and tragic dimension is always lurking. Dino Risi's film, with a screenplay by Ettore Scola, Ruggero Maccari, and Risi himself, punctuated by songs by Domenico Modugno and Peppino di Capri, and original music by Riz Ortolani, is a complex portrait of masculinity in the context of Italy's postwar economic miracle.
