VIAGEM AO PRINCÍPIO DO MUNDO | JOURNEY TO THE BEGINNING OF THE WORLD
Manoel de Oliveira | POR, FRA | 1997 | 95'
One of Manoel de Oliveira's most personal films, Journey to the Beginning of the World follows an old filmmaker (Marcello Mastroianni) as he travels through northern Portugal in the company of three of his actors, taking advantage of a break in the shooting of a film. One of the actors, a Frenchman of Portuguese origin, tries to find and recognize his roots, while the old filmmaker recalls episodes from his past. Oliveira makes Mastroianni, to whom he dedicates the film, his “alter ego.” In a double and even triple sense, Manoel de Oliveira is the effective driver of the film: behind the camera, through the character of Mastroianni, and physically, playing the role of the driver.
