Certainly one of the most perfect examples of European film noir, The Third Man, adapted from Graham Greene's novel, takes place in post-war Vienna, with the arrival of Holly (Joseph Cotten), a second-rate writer, who is surprised by the unexpected disappearance of Harry Lime, his childhood friend and host. The plot thickens with the possible existence of a “third man”, allegedly present at Harry's death, leading to police interference by Major Calloway (Trevor Howard), and Holly's growing attraction to Anna (Alida Valli), Harry's lover. This elusive character is famously played (and written) by Orson Welles.
