Second session of the Re-Camões film and conversation series, which proposes a series of cinematographic re-readings of Luís de Camões, on the occasion of the celebrations for the 500th anniversary of his birth. The session will feature a screening of the film Camões (1946) by José Leitão de Barros, followed by a conversation between the writer and professor Isabel Rio Novo and António Preto, director of the Casa do Cinema Manoel de Oliveira.
CAMÕES
José Leitão de Barros | POR | 1946 | 118'
A film about the adventurous life of the greatest writer in the Portuguese language, Luís Vaz de Camões. The troubled love affairs, the financial problems and the inglorious decline of a complex personality. This was, at the time, the biggest film production in Portugal, a kind of national artistic endeavour, which brought together resources like never before and a team of great actors, including António Vilar in the lead role and Eunice Muñoz. There was much speculation as to whether the film immortalised the regime more than the poet, or the regime on the pretext of the poet. Seen today, almost 80 years later, what is the place of this Camões by Leitão de Barros, who made a film as relevant as Maria do Mar sixteen years earlier?
