1907 AS EXTRAORDINÁRIAS DESVENTURAS
Fotograma de "As Extraordinárias Desventuras da Menina de Pedra" (2019), Gabriel Abrantes

Fourth session of the cycle of films and talks Modos de Rever: O Cinema e o Imaginário do Museu, with programming and moderation by Isabel Lopes Gomes. Following on from the previous cycle, which explored the rapprochement between cinema and the visual arts, this second session seeks to reflect on the representations of the museum in cinema, from different periods in its history to the present day. This session will feature screenings of Gabriel Abrantes' Les Extraordinaires Mésaventures de la Jeune Fille de Pierre (2019) and André de Toth's House of Wax (1953), followed by a conversation with the professors and researchers Nelson Araújo and Paulo Cunha, moderated by Isabel Lopes Gomes.

LES EXTRAORDINAIRES MÉSAVENTURES DE LA JEUNE FILLE DE PIERRE

Gabriel Abrantes | FRA, POR | 2019 | 20'

Tired of being a banal architectural ornament, a sculpture flees the Louvre to confront the real life of the streets of Paris. In its author's unusual, surreal and comic style, this short film is both a plea and a demonstration for the inalienable value of freedom, as Gabriel Abrantes himself says: "I wanted to make a film about art and its relationship with politics. The film is a metaphor for art that wants to escape the institutional constraints of the museum and become politically engaged in the “real world”."

HOUSE OF WAX

André de Toth | USA | 1953 | 88'

One of the most accomplished works by Hungarian André de Toth, a veteran of the American B-series, "Masks of Wax" tells the story of a New York sculptor who opens a wax museum to exhibit the likenesses of famous historical figures. However, this approach gets him into trouble with his business partner, who demands that the exhibits become more extreme, using this lurid appeal to increase profits. The presence of Vincent Price and a series of visual tricks justify the influence the film had on later horror cinema, influencing a number of directors to come and inspiring other films with a similar theme, including a remake.
