Esteban
Manrique Reol, Biologist, got his PhD in Biology at the Autonomous University
of Madrid in 1979. After 230 years of university teaching (Botany,
Environmental Pollution, Palynology at the University Complutense, Arcos del
Jalón High School and Faculty of Farmacy), he entered the CSIC as Research
Professor in 2002. He has been the
Director of the National Museum of Natural Sciences from July 2009 until August
2013. He is currently the national representative of the Spanish Ministry of
Economy, Industry and Competitiveness in the European ERA-NET research Program
BiodivERsA from April 2013 and. His work is focused on plant ecology,
ecophysiology, and the effects of air pollutants and atmospheric nitrogen
deposition on Mediterranean Ecosystems. He is mostly interested in the role of
soil chemistry and nutrient cycle in keystone Mediterranean species for the
long-term sustainability of such systems. He is now focused on the study of
atmospheric nitrogen and phosphorous deposition on Mediterranean high mountains
National Parks, and for doing so collaborating with researchers from other
research groups in Spain (URJC-Madrid, CIEMAT-Madrid, CSIC-EEZA-Madrid and
Centro de Ecología Funcional, Universidad de Coimbra, Portugal, among others).
In 1990 he was appointed as Deputy Director General for Knowledge Promotion
(Spanish Ministry of Education and Science). In 1986 was appointed as Spanish
representative in the Environment and Climate program of the II European
Framework Program, activity developed until 2003. In 2003 he was appointed as
the Deputy Director for International Research Organisms and Programs. He has
published more than 68 papers receiving over 2698 citations, as well as several
books and book chapters. He has supervised 8 PhD Theses and 3 MsC.
