will be presented one of the films that inspired Manoel de Oliveira to become
direct Labour on the Douro River and that shaped his understanding of
cinema as an art form.
Berlin: Symphony of a Great Cityis one of the most representative films
of what came to be called the cycle of "City Symphonies". Throughout
the world, from Paris to São Paulo, several filmmakers from the 1920s and early
1930s filmed the life of their cities. Only cinema, the art of movement, could
capture and shape the pulsating modern city, with all its cars, trams, and busy
streets. Taking advantage of the new possibilities of film editing, Walter
Ruttmann, like so many others, re-enacted the city rhythms, making a film that,
despite being silent, is a visual symphony.
